The Battery Boss is an easy to use module that provides regulated DC voltages from unregulated inputs and provides the logic required to maintain and recharge batteries. The full featured version, BB10-CFP, includes a real time clock, watch dog timer, calendar, gas gauge, auto wakeup alarm timer and many other software features. A simple DC converter only version, BB10-CO, provides the various regulated outputs without the added cost of the smart charger. The BB-CP provides the smart charger functions but not the regulated outputs. Current limit circuits in the BB-CP protect battery and load from short circuit damage.

A major benefit from the proper control of charging and discharging is improved battery life. Many battery users have experienced the "Memory Effect" of NiCd batteries where a battery seems to loose performance. Actually, what many users have experienced is a cell short. A freshly charged battery with a shorted cell operates for a time but with use the voltage drops. The loss of a cell causes a voltage reduction that is observed as a low battery. The major cause of cell shorts is over discharge. Battery Boss software prevents over discharge and cell reversal.
